This photo was tagged as being from the popular diving destination of Koh Trang, in the Gulf of Thailand… but this is clearly the yellow-finned fish from the Andaman and Java Seas. There are surprisingly few images of this group from this heavily explored region, so I’m uncertain what to make of it. Is this truly an Indian Ocean species that has found a way past peninsular Malaysia, or is this merely mislabeled? Or maybe its just a weirdly aberrant specimen with a bright yellow tail. Crazier things have happened. I’ve yet to run into any other Indian Ocean species from this region, which leads to me believe the latter hypothesis.
